Taryn Brumfitt is the founder behind the Body Image Movement. In a world full of false prophets, Taryn is the real deal. Wise, passionate and authentic, Taryn is on a mission to change the way women think about themselves. And how others view them. Taryn Brumfitt is an internationally recognised positive body image activist leading a global movement to shift the way women think about themselves, and in turn, feel about their bodies.
While contemplating impending plastic surgery to improve her appearance post-pregnancy, Taryn had a body image epiphany. A mother of three beautiful children, she wondered how on earth she could teach them the fundamental human right of accepting and loving one’s body if she was uncomfortable in her very own. Instead of standing before their impressionable eyes with a surgically enhanced figure, the answer to loving the skin she was in became a clear one. Something had to change about her body, and it wasn’t the way it looked. It was the way she learnt to feel about it.
Having experienced the highs and lows of a love/hate relationship with her body, Taryn has an unwavering desire to share what she has discovered on her personal journey. A desire to teach not only her children, but the world, the invaluable lesson that loving your body can bring about happiness and change your life forever.
“The lines on my face only serve to remind me that life is short and the bucket list is long!”
Taryn’s message has reached over 100 million people worldwide via social media and has seen her interviewed by Good Morning America, 60 Minutes and The Today Show and featured on the cover of Women’s Health and Fitness.
Taryn’s latest project, Embrace the documentary, has been supported by the likes of Rosie O’Donnell, Zooey Deschanel, Ashton Kutcher and Ricki Lake after a whopping 8 million viewers were moved by it’s compelling trailer.
She enjoys dancing like no one is watching (even when people are), sipping on green smoothies, kicking butt at karate and reading books in a hammock from her hometown of Adelaide, Australia … oh, and famously rockin’ a pair of pink and orange glasses!
What is the Body Image Movement?
Despite being happily married, and successfully juggling motherhood with running a thriving photography business, Taryn Brumfitt was privately struggling with crippling body image issues. Close to resorting to plastic surgery to ‘fix’ her post-childbirth body, Taryn decided that what she really needed to change was not in fact her body, it was her attitude towards it. This was the beginning of The Body Image Movement, a now an internationally recognised crusade that recognises the importance of body diversity, redefining and rewriting beauty ideals by harnessing and facilitating positive body image activism.
The Body Image Movement teaches women the value and power of loving their body from the inside out, supporting health and happiness at every size. Advocating natural ageing and natural beauty, the movement aims to uncover the true beauty that lies within each and every one of us, the beauty of a person you can’t physically see; one’s humility, kindness, humour, respect and generosity.
EMBRACE the documentary that will create a global change.
There’s only so much you can say in 140 characters or in a four minute television interview, so what happens when you’re bursting with so much more you want to say? So much more you need to say in order to create global change? A born storyteller, Taryn Brumfitt knew there was only one way to share her journey from self loathing to self acceptance. Introducing Embrace, the documentary.
From following The Sydney Skinny, the world’s largest nude ocean swim dedicated to helping people ‘drown’ their body insecurities, to exploring the sexualisation and excessive photo editing of women in the media and the unethical tricks marketers use to target women’s insecurities, Embrace uncovers why poor body image has become a global epidemic and what women everywhere can do to have brighter future.
After posting a non-traditional ‘before’ and ‘after’ photo on social media, Taryn became the instant focus of media attention the world over. People were astonished – how could a woman possibly love her body ‘after’, with the visible signs of bearing three children? Many applauded her for her bravery in posting such raw imagery while many berated her for promoting obesity, going as far as labelling her a poor role model for her kids.
This got Taryn to thinking. The culture of body loathing and body shaming had reached epic proportions worldwide.
Taryn draws on her life experiences to deliver an inspirational message.
